Unfortunately, Labor Day is not celebrated here so yesterday was my first day of classes; I had two starting at 12:30. I got to class really early since I didn't know where the classroom was, but good thing I did! There were an additional 77 students in the room that are on the wait list to get into the course! There were so many people that most of the extra students had to sit on the floor. I actually knew three other students that were in that class - one was my social science buddy mentor, one was a friend I had met at non-local student orientation and the last one was another exchange student from Australia.
My second class was empty compared to the first and I understand why many local students would choose not to take the course, if they knew who the professor was beforehand. For each two hour class she uses a six slide Powerpoint with a long quote on it (Aristotle, Smith, Durkheim, etc.) She speaks very quietly and not great English, so boring! I had spoken to a local student who is a sociology major here at HKU and who had taken the class before, and she said she had the same professor and it will be a long semester.
In the morning I actually decided to walk to school, which is exactly a mile away. My roommate has done this before, but failed to mention that it is up another hill. Bad idea! I will not be walking to school again until it is below 80, most likely in November.
