Junk Boat Party
Today was a public holiday which means no classes (even though I normally have Friday's off) and a group of us decided to go on a junk boat. Junk boats are really popular here, and you can rent the huge boats for a big group. Included in the price is a driver and a second assistant, who stay on board the whole time. At different price points there are many cool add-ons, such as food/drinks, banana boats, speed boats, inflatable slides, big tubes, etc. However, our junk was the simplest one and we had to bring our own food.
It was perfect weather, although I had been scared all week it was going to rain and thunder as there was supposed to be a typhoon hitting (luckily it did not hit Hong Kong). There were forty of us on the boat, although I only knew six others, so I made quite a few new friends. The others on the boat were from a mix of schools here in Hong Kong and were also a mix of local and exchange students.
The trip was all day (10am-6pm) and was only about $35 USD! We met at 9:30am at the Central Piers where there were many other groups of people waiting to get picked up by their own junk boats. After getting picked up we were driven to Clearwater Bay, where there were tons of other junk boats anchored. After getting there, we spent the rest of the day hanging out, swimming and jumping off the top of the boat.
Before coming to Hong Kong a girl who had been on exchange a semester before me had said that she regretted she didn't have time to do a junk. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to, as it was one of my favorite things I've done here so far! I wish there was something like this back in the US, and at the same price. Unfortunately, it's the end of junk season so I don't think I'll have the opportunity to go on another one.
I'm so glad to have gone on the trip!
